Puss in Boots, in this second spin-off dedicated to him, is as always a boaster; he is a skilled and infallible adventurer, a seeker of emotions and enemies to defeat; he does not respond to any authority and loves the center of the scene, we meet him in a furious action that leads him to defeat a giant in spectacular ways.
Only his vanity, when the battle is over, will lead him to die for the umpteenth time. Back to life, he will discover that he has exhausted his nine lives (a summary shows us his stupid previous seven deaths), or rather that he has reached the last one. The next death will be the real one, like for anyone else. Initially disinterested in the matter, he will meet the personification of death, who has finally arrived to take him. Realizing he can't beat her, he gets scared and runs away, hiding in a cat lady's house as a lap cat.
The actor then said that he suffered a heart attack in January 2017. This near-death experience changed him and made him see things differently: he began to adopt a healthier lifestyle and not waste this second chance. Exactly like the Puss in the movie.
If there is any takeaway animation from the Puss in Boots 2 Shrek spin-off film, it's proof of how successful animated films can be. At its core, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a silly movie for kids, and much of the writing is framed with a younger audience in mind.
However, the sequel still appeals to older viewers with its animation and story. That dichotomy allowed Puss in Boots: Last Wish to become a critical success, and if a film of its kind can achieve that goal, it shows just how capable animation is of appealing to anyone. This perfectly encapsulates Guillermo del Toro's statement about energy as a medium, not a genre.
This is already a fantastic, gloomy, comical, and intimate beginning. Then there will be one last adventure that will call him back into action to regain the nine lives and return to what he once was.
However, this idea of having lost something inner and intimate and having revised all expectations for one's life, humiliating himself as a domestic cat after an existence of great adventures, ugly and unshaven, is a concept that the film makes very well (and Antonio Banderas is good, who doubles the Cat again also in Italian, to render it with his voice). Puss in Boots must fight to escape the death that pursues him and run to find his spirit. This adventurous mood is undoubtedly the most beautiful, the most evocative, and the most characteristic thing; it is what gives the film its personality.
Finally, Banderas revealed that the decision to collaborate again on the voice acting of the film was made after reading the script because he was impressed by how deep the story dug to convey this message and knowing that this film would be seen by families, all together, during the Christmas holidays.
The story and graphics are a big part of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish's universal appeal, and there are good reasons for that. Much like The Bad Guys, another Dreamworks project, the graphics and animation style of Puss in Boots 2 take the best elements of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and the story has a heart and maturity that is not usually seen in DreamWorks films.
Resulting in praise from adult moviegoers, despite not being the target audience. Those qualities were optional for a children's film, so adding them shows that DreamWorks was striving for a rate that anyone could appreciate, and Puss in Boots 2 more than benefited from that.
The Puss, with a series of helpers, new characters, rivals, and villains, will end up in yet another "other world," that is, those places that the characters discover with us, all to be explored, lustful, mysterious, full of pitfalls and absurd creatures. These narrative and visual solutions have populated many animated films in recent years, all clones of Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World, with narrative devices and repetitive graphics, often all the same.
In this case, the other world is a black forest that hides a place that seems to work like a video game. This map creates a new reality depending on who touches it, which tracks the characters in real-time as if they were equipped with GPS and opens different "schemes" with other "bosses" depending on the path. It is not the only case, but everything in Puss in Boots 2, starting from the discourse on the different lives depleted and to be "recharged," seems to follow the logic of video games, as if it were a frame within a frame, a world animated that works with game mechanics.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was a huge hit, and what makes it even more impressive is its placement in the overall Shrek franchise. Not only is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Shrek's sixth film, but it's also the first to come out after more than a decade of perceived mediocrity. DreamWorks' Shrek film franchise is often perceived to have fallen sharply in quality over the years, with each installment following Shrek 2 receiving mixed to negative reception. The first Puss in Boots movie was also largely ignored, and with development on Shrek 5 stalled, the franchise survived largely on memes and nostalgia for the first two films.
However, the film plays well with this double plot. On the one hand, there is the classic quest full of enemies (going to recover a magical artifact that will grant a wish), and on the other, the personal challenge of the protagonist, who must also escape death. This real engine makes Puss in Boots 2 a better-than-average cartoon.
It is not the classic humor of modern animated cinema (which in many ways it was Shrek who cemented) that holds everything up, but his fighting spirit, the ardor of the characters, the dynamism of the action, and the sense of courage of a protagonist who not only fights not to die but also fights because he doesn't want to die inside, who doesn't want to see his life downwards.
