However, this idea of having lost something inner and intimate and having revised all expectations for one's life, humiliating himself as a domestic cat after an existence of great adventures, ugly and unshaven, is a concept that the film makes very well (and Antonio Banderas is good, who doubles the Cat again also in Italian, to render it with his voice). Puss in Boots must fight to escape the death that pursues him and run to find his spirit. This adventurous mood is undoubtedly the most beautiful, the most evocative, and the most characteristic thing; it is what gives the film its personality.
Finally, Banderas revealed that the decision to collaborate again on the voice acting of the film was made after reading the script because he was impressed by how deep the story dug to convey this message and knowing that this film would be seen by families, all together, during the Christmas holidays.
The story and graphics are a big part of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish's universal appeal, and there are good reasons for that. Much like The Bad Guys, another Dreamworks project, the graphics and animation style of Puss in Boots 2 take the best elements of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and the story has a heart and maturity that is not usually seen in DreamWorks films.
Resulting in praise from adult moviegoers, despite not being the target audience. Those qualities were optional for a children's film, so adding them shows that DreamWorks was striving for a rate that anyone could appreciate, and Puss in Boots 2 more than benefited from that.

In this case, the other world is a black forest that hides a place that seems to work like a video game. This map creates a new reality depending on who touches it, which tracks the characters in real-time as if they were equipped with GPS and opens different "schemes" with other "bosses" depending on the path. It is not the only case, but everything in Puss in Boots 2, starting from the discourse on the different lives depleted and to be "recharged," seems to follow the logic of video games, as if it were a frame within a frame, a world animated that works with game mechanics.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was a huge hit, and what makes it even more impressive is its placement in the overall Shrek franchise. Not only is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Shrek's sixth film, but it's also the first to come out after more than a decade of perceived mediocrity. DreamWorks' Shrek film franchise is often perceived to have fallen sharply in quality over the years, with each installment following Shrek 2 receiving mixed to negative reception. The first Puss in Boots movie was also largely ignored, and with development on Shrek 5 stalled, the franchise survived largely on memes and nostalgia for the first two films.
However, the film plays well with this double plot. On the one hand, there is the classic quest full of enemies (going to recover a magical artifact that will grant a wish), and on the other, the personal challenge of the protagonist, who must also escape death. This real engine makes Puss in Boots 2 a better-than-average cartoon.
It is not the classic humor of modern animated cinema (which in many ways it was Shrek who cemented) that holds everything up, but his fighting spirit, the ardor of the characters, the dynamism of the action, and the sense of courage of a protagonist who not only fights not to die but also fights because he doesn't want to die inside, who doesn't want to see his life downwards.
